Operation

7.NS.A.3

Definition

One of the four mathematical processes: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. With integers, all four follow the sign rules.

Examples

  • (-4) + (-3) = -7 (same signs add); (-5) - (-2) = (-5) + 2 = -3.
  • (-4) × (-3) = +12; -12 ÷ 3 = -4.

Key rule

All four operations obey the sign rules with integers.

Memory hook

Add, subtract, multiply, divide — signs rule them all.
