Exponents & Scientific Notation
8 lessons, about 19 days with the quiz, review and test, in one download: Powers and Exponent Notation, Exponent Rules, Negative and Zero Exponents, Mixed Exponent Rules, Estimating with Powers of 10, Scientific Notation Conversion, Operations with Scientific Notation, Scientific Notation Word Problems.
8 lessons, in teaching order
Built to 8.EE.A.1, 8.EE.A.3, 8.EE.A.4. Each lesson has guided notes, practice, an exit ticket, a homework page, worked answer keys and a click-by-click Teacher Deck.
- Lesson 1 Powers and Exponent Notation I can find the base of a power, evaluate powers of negative numbers and decimals, tell (−3)⁴ from −3⁴, and do the powers ahead of × ÷ + − in an expression.
- Lesson 2 Exponent Rules I can use the product, quotient and power rules to simplify expressions with whole-number exponents, and explain each rule by counting factors.
- Lesson 3 Negative and Zero Exponents I can evaluate and simplify expressions with zero and negative integer exponents, and write every answer with positive exponents only.
- Lesson 4 Mixed Exponent Rules I can simplify number expressions that need several exponent rules, with zero and negative exponents, to one power of the base, and find the value when asked.
- Lesson 5 Estimating with Powers of 10 I can estimate very large and very small quantities as one digit times a power of 10, and divide the digits and the powers of 10 to tell how many times as large one amount is as another.
- Lesson 6 Scientific Notation Conversion I can write very large and very small numbers in scientific notation and in standard form, and use powers of ten to tell how many times as large one number is as another.
- Lesson 7 Operations with Scientific Notation I can multiply, divide, add and subtract numbers written in scientific notation, match the powers of ten before adding or subtracting, and finish every answer in scientific notation.
- Lesson 8 Scientific Notation Word Problems I can read calculator displays and standard-form numbers as scientific notation, solve real-world problems, and answer in a sensible unit.
