The lessons

5 lessons, in teaching order

Built to 8.EE.A.2, 8.NS.A.1, 8.NS.A.2. Each lesson has guided notes, practice, an exit ticket, a homework page, worked answer keys and a click-by-click Teacher Deck.

  1. Lesson 1 Square & Cube Roots 8.EE.A.2 · 2 days I can evaluate square roots of perfect squares and cube roots of perfect cubes, solve x² = p and x³ = p, and know that the square root of a whole number that is not a perfect square is irrational.
  2. Lesson 2 Rational vs Irrational Numbers 8.NS.A.1 · 1 day I can tell whether a number is rational or irrational from its decimal expansion or its square root, and write a repeating decimal as a fraction.
  3. Lesson 3 Repeating Decimals to Fractions 8.NS.A.1 · 2 days I can choose the multiples of a repeating decimal that line up, subtract them, write the decimal as a fraction in simplest form, and check it by dividing.
  4. Lesson 4 Approximating Irrational Numbers 8.NS.A.2 · 2 days I can find the whole numbers and tenths a square root is between, round it to the nearest tenth, and use rational approximations to compare, order and place irrational numbers.
  5. Lesson 5 Roots in Context 8.EE.A.2 · 2 days I can find the side of a square from its area and the edge of a cube from its volume, and give the answer left as a root or as a rounded decimal, with units, as the question asks.
