The lessons

7 lessons, in teaching order

Built to 8.EE.B.5, 8.F.B.4, 8.EE.B.6, 8.F.A.3. Each lesson has guided notes, practice, an exit ticket, a homework page, worked answer keys and a click-by-click Teacher Deck.

  1. Lesson 1 Proportional Relationships 8.EE.B.5 · 2 days I can tell when a graph shows a proportional relationship, find the unit rate k from a graph, a table or an equation, read it as the slope, and compare two proportional relationships shown in different ways.
  2. Lesson 2 Comparing Proportional Relationships 8.EE.B.5 · 2 days I can find the unit rate of a proportional relationship from a graph, a table, an equation or words, turn a rate around or change its units so two rates line up, and compare them in context.
  3. Lesson 3 Slope from Graphs, Tables and Points 8.F.B.4 · 2 days I can find a line's slope from a graph, a table or two points: the rise divided by the run, both found from one start point to one end point.
  4. Lesson 4 Slope and Similar Triangles 8.EE.B.6 · 2 days I can show that slope triangles on one line are similar, so every one gives the same rise ÷ run; use that to find an unknown run or rise, test a point, and write y = mx or y = mx + b from a triangle to a point (x, y).
  5. Lesson 5 Types of Slope 8.EE.B.6 · 1 day I can read a line as x grows to tell whether its slope is positive, negative, 0 or undefined, and write the equations y = c and x = c.
  6. Lesson 6 Slope-Intercept Form 8.EE.B.6 · 2 days I can read the slope m and the y-intercept b from an equation, a graph or two points, write y = mx + b, and graph a line from (0, b) and its slope.
  7. Lesson 7 Graphing y = mx + b 8.F.A.3 · 2 days I can graph y = mx + b by plotting (0, b) on the y-axis, then stepping by the slope to more points and drawing the line.
