Terminating Decimal

Definition

A decimal that ends — it has a finite number of digits after the decimal point. It results when a division has a remainder of zero.

Examples

  • 1/4 = 0.25 (stops).
  • 3/8 = 0.375 (stops).

Key rule

A fraction terminates only when the denominator's prime factors are 2 and/or 5.
