The lessons

9 lessons, in teaching order

Built to 7.EE.B.4, 7.EE.B.4a, 7.EE.B.4b, 7.EE.B.3. Each lesson has guided notes, practice, an exit ticket, a homework page, worked answer keys and a click-by-click Teacher Deck.

  1. Lesson 1 One-Step Equations with Rationals 7.EE.B.4 · 2 days I can solve one-step equations with negative, fraction and decimal numbers: do the inverse operation to both sides, keep each number's sign, and check in the original equation.
  2. Lesson 2 Two-Step Equations 7.EE.B.4a · 2 days I can solve equations like px + q = r and p(x + q) = r, check the solution, and compare an algebraic solution with an arithmetic one.
  3. Lesson 3 Writing Two-Step Equations 7.EE.B.4a · 2 days I can write an equation like px + q = r for a story: put the amount for each unit with the letter, add or subtract the one-time amount, set it equal to the total, then solve and answer with units.
  4. Lesson 4 Arithmetic vs. Algebraic Solutions 7.EE.B.4a · 2 days I can solve a word problem two ways, with arithmetic that undoes the story in reverse order and with an equation, and match each arithmetic step to the equation step that does the same thing.
  5. Lesson 5 Solving Equations with the Distributive Property 7.EE.B.4a · 2 days I can solve equations like p(x + q) = r two ways, by dividing both sides by p first or by distributing p first, with negative and fraction values of p, and choose the way with easier numbers.
  6. Lesson 6 Two-Step Inequalities 7.EE.B.4b · 2 days I can solve inequalities such as px + q > r in two steps, flip the symbol only when I multiply or divide both sides by a negative number, graph the solutions and explain what they mean in a real-world problem.
  7. Lesson 7 Writing Inequalities from Word Problems 7.EE.B.4b · 2 days I can write an inequality like px + q > r for a word problem, letting each phrase choose the symbol, solve it, and say which answers the story allows, such as the greatest whole number of tickets.
  8. Lesson 8 Inequalities with Negative Coefficients 7.EE.B.4b · 2 days I can explain why multiplying or dividing both sides of an inequality by a negative number reverses the symbol, keep the symbol when I add or subtract, and check with a number on each side.
  9. Lesson 9 Multi-Step Rational Problems 7.EE.B.3 · 2 days I can solve multi-step real-life problems with fractions, decimals and percents, and use an estimate to check that my answer is reasonable.
