Definition

A rate that compares a quantity to one unit of another, found by making the denominator equal to one. It equals the slope of a proportional graph.

Examples

  • 12 dollars for 4 pounds = 3 dollars per pound.
  • 180 miles in 3 hours = 60 miles per hour.

On a proportional graph, the unit rate is the slope.
