Coefficient

Definition

In scientific notation, the decimal number multiplied by a power of ten. It must be greater than or equal to one and less than ten.

Examples

  • 3.6 × 10⁵: 3.6 is a valid coefficient (between 1 and 10).
  • 36 × 10⁴ is NOT valid — 36 is too big.

Key rule

The coefficient must be at least 1 and less than 10.
