Two-Step Inequality

7.EE.B.4b

Definition

An inequality solved using two inverse operations. When multiplying or dividing both sides by a negative number, reverse the inequality sign.

Examples

  • 2x + 1 > 7 → subtract 1 → 2x > 6 → divide by 2 → x > 3.
  • -2x < 6 → divide by -2 → x > -3 (sign flips from < to >).

Key rule

Flip the sign when multiplying or dividing by a negative number.

Memory hook

Solve like an equation, but flip for negatives.
