Definition
A term in an expression that contains only a number, no variable. Its value stays the same regardless of the variable's value.
Examples
- In 2x + 5, the constant is 5.
- In −3x2 + 7x − 4, the constant is −4.
Key rule
Constants include negative numbers too — in 3x − 8, the constant is −8, not 8.
