Origin

8.EE.B.5

Definition

The point where the x-axis and y-axis intersect on a coordinate plane, with coordinates zero, zero. Proportional relationships always pass through the origin.

Examples

  • Every proportional graph passes through (0,0).
  • Buy 0 items, pay 0 dollars — that's the origin in context.

Key rule

Proportional relationships always pass through the origin; non-proportional ones don't.

Memory hook

Where the axes cross — (0,0).
