7.EE.B.4b

Definition

The set of all values that satisfy an inequality. Shown on a number line with a circle (open or closed) at the boundary and shading in the direction of solutions.

Examples

  • x > 3 has infinitely many solutions: 3.1, 3.5, 4, 10, 100...
  • An equation like 2x = 6 has one solution (x=3); the inequality 2x > 6 has infinite solutions (x>3).

Key rule

Use a number line to show the solution set of an inequality.
