Slope-Intercept Form

8.EE.B.6

Definition

A linear equation written as y equals m x plus b, where m is the slope and b is the y-intercept. It makes graphing a line quick and direct.

Examples

  • y = 2x + 3: slope 2, y-intercept 3.
  • Start at b on the y-axis, then use the slope to step to the next point.

Key rule

Start at the y-intercept, then use the slope to graph the line.

Memory hook

y = mx + b — slope and starting point in one equation.
