Renormalize

8.EE.A.4

Definition

To rewrite a number so the coefficient is between 1 and 10, adjusting the power of ten accordingly. Needed after multiplying or adding in scientific notation.

Examples

  • 42 × 10⁵ renormalizes to 4.2 × 10⁶.
  • 0.6 × 10⁵ renormalizes to 6 × 10⁴.

Key rule

If the coefficient is 10 or more, move the decimal left and add to the exponent; if less than 1, move right and subtract.

Memory hook

Adjust the coefficient back between 1 and 10.
