No Solution

8.EE.C.7a

Definition

Occurs when solving an equation eliminates the variable and leaves a false statement. The two sides can never be equal, shown graphically by parallel lines.

Examples

  • 2x+5=2x+3 simplifies to 5=3 — false.
  • Graphically, the two lines are parallel and never intersect.

Key rule

A false statement with no variable left means no solution.

Memory hook

Variable disappears, statement is false — no solution.
