8.EE.A.1

Definition

The same base appearing in two or more powers. Exponent rules such as adding or subtracting exponents only apply when the bases are identical.

Teach it

Where it is taught, with guided notes, practice, homework, an exit ticket and an interactive Teacher Deck.

Examples

  • 53 · 52 = 55 works because the bases match.
  • 23 · 54 stays as it is — different bases don't combine.

Key rule

Exponent rules only work when the bases match.

Memory hook

Same base — then the exponent rules apply.
