Like Base

8.EE.A.1

Definition

The same base appearing in two or more powers. Exponent rules such as adding or subtracting exponents only apply when the bases are identical.

Examples

  • 5³ · 5² = 5⁵ works because the bases match.
  • 2³ · 5⁴ stays as it is — different bases don't combine.

Key rule

Exponent rules only work when the bases match.

Memory hook

Same base — then the exponent rules apply.
