Definition

The small raised number that tells how many times to use the base as a factor.

Examples

  • 5² = 5 × 5 = 25, where the exponent is 2.
  • The exponent tells how many times to multiply the base by itself.

Key rule

The exponent counts how many times the base multiplies itself.
