Definition

A condition or limit in a problem, such as a total number or total cost, that is translated into an equation. A system of equations encodes all the constraints.

Examples

  • '10 tickets sold' becomes the equation a + c = 10.
  • 'Total of 68 dollars' becomes 8a + 5c = 68.

Key rule

Each constraint in a word problem becomes one equation.
