The problem this sheet solves

Applying FOIL where it does not apply leaves out both products formed by the trinomial's middle term, and the wrong answer LOOKS finished: four terms, standard form, degrees running cleanly from three down to zero, no visible gap. There is nothing about it to notice, which is what makes it worth teaching rather than mentioning. This sheet is careful never to call FOIL wrong — it is the name of the two by two case and it is correct there. What it is not is a method. Rows times columns counts the products for any two polynomials, and the check is a single question: did every term of both factors get used. Combining by DEGREE rather than by position is the second habit.

The key rule

Rows times columns gives the number of products. FOIL names only the two by two case, so count the cells instead, then combine by degree.

Watch out

The mistake: A student writes (x + 4)(x² + 2x + 3) = x3 + 4x2 + 3x + 12.

The fix: x3 + 6x2 + 11x + 12. FOIL used the first and last terms of the second factor and never touched the 2x, so 2x2 and 8x are missing. At x = 1 the product is 5 · 6 = 30, and their answer gives 20.
