A fraction whose numerator is greater than or equal to its denominator.

Examples

  • 5/4 is improper — it equals 1 whole and 1 fourth.
  • 7/3 is improper — it equals 2 wholes and 1 third.

Key rule

An improper fraction is one whole or more, so it converts to a mixed number.
