Equally Likely

7.SP.C.5

Definition

Outcomes that each have the same probability of occurring. If there are n equally likely outcomes, P(each) = 1/n.

Examples

  • A fair coin: P(Heads) = P(Tails) = 1/2.
  • A fair die: P(1) = P(2) = ... = P(6) = 1/6.

Key rule

A spinner with unequal sections is NOT equally likely — check the sections match.

Memory hook

Every outcome has the exact same shot.
