Composite Solid

HSG-GMD.A.3

Definition

A three-dimensional figure made of two or more simple solids combined.

Examples

  • A solid made of a cylinder and a cone: V = V(cylinder) + V(cone), adding the volumes of the parts.
  • A figure made of a rectangular prism topped with a pyramid finds its volume by adding both parts.

Key rule

Find a composite solid's volume by adding the volumes of its simple parts.

Memory hook

Break it into simple solids, then add up the volumes.
