What students learn

Students learn to solve ax² + bx + c = 0 with the quadratic formula: they write it = 0 first, read a, b and c with their signs, divide the whole top by 2a, and simplify fully.

Watch out

A student solving 2x² − 7x − 4 = 0 writes x = 7 ± 9/4.

The mistakes it targets

• Divides only the square root part by 2a
• Squares a negative b to a negative number
• Drops the minus sign of c in −4ac
• Divides by 2 instead of 2a
• Reads a, b and c before the equation equals 0
• Rounds before the final step
