The problem this sheet solves
Solving graphically asks what the crossing POINT means, and students reach for the y-coordinate because it is the larger, more answer-looking number. The x-coordinate is the solution; the y-coordinate is what both sides equal there. Both are real information, which is exactly why picking the wrong one feels safe. This sheet names what each coordinate of the intersection tells you, so the answer is chosen by meaning rather than by habit, and it checks by substituting x back into both sides. It also builds the idea that any equation can be read as two functions meeting, which is what makes graphical solving worth knowing.
The key rule
Graph both sides. At the crossing, the x-coordinate is the solution and the y-coordinate is what both sides equal. Check by putting that x into both sides.
The solution is an x. The y is what both sides equal.
Watch out
The mistake: Two graphs meet at (3, 7), and a student says the solution is 7.
The fix: The solution is x = 3. The 7 is what both sides equal at x = 3 — real information, but not what the equation asked for.
