The problem this sheet solves

Normalising scientific notation is a TRADE: whatever you divide the coefficient by, you multiply the power of ten by. Students move both the same direction, so 20 × 108 becomes 2 × 107 instead of 2 × 109. The result is properly formatted and confidently wrong, which is exactly why it survives a check that only looks at the form. This sheet makes normalising an explicit trade with a direction, so students can see that moving both the same way changes the value. Operations are separated by what actually happens to the exponents, and answers are sanity checked by magnitude, which catches the hundred-fold error immediately.

The key rule

Normalising is a TRADE: whatever the coefficient is divided by, the power of ten is multiplied by. Move both the same way and you are out by a hundred.

Coefficient down, exponent up. Never both.

Watch out

The mistake: After 20 × 108 a student writes 2 × 107.

The fix: 2 × 109. The coefficient was divided by ten, so the power had to be MULTIPLIED by ten. Moving both down divides the whole number by a hundred, and the answer still looks finished, which is why it survives.
