Interpreting Parts of an Expression
I can name the terms, coefficients, factors, and constant term of an expression.
The problem this sheet solves
Term and factor are the two words students most often swap, and the swap is invisible until it matters. If 3xy reads as three terms, then combining like terms, identifying a coefficient and describing what a quantity represents in context all inherit the same error. The fix is structural, not verbal: a term ends where a plus or minus begins. This sheet gives students a boundary test they can apply rather than four definitions to memorise, and the anatomy figure labels a real expression part by part so terms, coefficients, factors and the constant are seen in one picture. It is the structure sheet that later work on interpreting expressions in context leans on.
The key rule
A term ends where a + or − begins. Everything multiplied together WITHIN a term, like the 3, x, and y in 3xy, are its factors — not separate terms.
Count the + and − signs outside any parentheses to count the terms. Multiplication never starts a new one.
Watch out
The mistake: “3xy has 3 terms: 3, x, and y” — counting factors as if they were separate terms.
The fix: 3xy is ONE term with three factors (3, x, and y) multiplied together. A term ends where a + or − begins.
