Classifying Real Numbers
I can classify a real number as natural, whole, integer, rational, and/or irrational.
The problem this sheet solves
Classifying real numbers looks like vocabulary recall until you notice students are reading SYMBOLS instead of values. A radical sign means irrational, a decimal point means not an integer, a minus sign means not whole. None of those are true, and each one produces confident wrong answers that a definition on the board does not touch. This sheet tests outward from the narrowest set a number could belong to, so classifying becomes a procedure rather than a feeling, and it makes students SIMPLIFY before they judge. The nested-sets figure shows why every natural number is also an integer and a rational, which is the part students recite without believing. Rational and irrational are drawn as separate, non-overlapping regions, because the usual error is treating them as a spectrum.
The key rule
Real numbers split into two non-overlapping groups: rational and irrational, never both. Inside rational, natural numbers nest inside whole numbers, which nest inside integers, which nest inside every rational number.
Work outward from the narrowest set that fits — one number, several sets, all at once.
Watch out
The mistake: Marking √49 irrational just because it has a radical sign.
The fix: Simplify first: √49 = 7, so it's rational. Only a non-perfect-square radical, like √50, is irrational.
